True true. I've not spent the time to go back and fully digest that mindjob of a game thoroughly. I've just been going back to Once Upon A Time on and off when something clicks. I'm gonna play the game again during the Christmas break, this time also hunting for items since now I know when I can hunt without fear of imps.

You know what really struck me about Diana's dress (besides that the pattern is obnoxious to draw)? How similar it is to the modern-day Japanese schoolgirl outfit, which I believe was imported to Japan around the Meiji era from England anyway. So if we're going with poor kid who gets overly sexualized and molested (I completely agree that Hoffman's "prepping" Diana to take Clara's spot if not already doing "double duty" so to speak), I think it's a pretty interesting comparison.
As for her bandage, I wondered about that too, and for me, it screams molestation. Have you ever seen Audition? Similar situation there, 'cept no one's forcing Princess Di to dance for them.
And I also wanted to add a giant LOL to the entire tone of the post; the use of the word "grody", "pet man" and "meg's lips did curve up in a decidedly unpleasant smirk, the kind of smile that lets you know you've just topped their sh__list with honours" made me giggle hysterically.

I know that the sailor uniform looks like it was lifted from the Royal Navy uniforms for enlisted men during the late 1800's. I wouldn't be surprised in the sailor uniform was lifted from British sailors back then, since the Japanese affluent tried to emulate a lot of Western culture back then, and back then the only schools that would require uniforms would most likely be rich (and Western oriented) schools.

I don't know about over in England, but here in the US, in the old days, sailor-style outfits for young girls and woman were hardly uncommon.

I don't know, I just can't seem to get past it as a symbol of sexualizing Diana, what with the weight it carries in Japanese culture.

Yeah, them and they're obsession with pre-pubescent girls, I wouldn't be surprised. I actually wouldn't be surprised if they sexualized Diana just to get people to take notice and it has no function in the game.

I wouldn't be surprised either, but I like the whole little Freudian can of worms it opens regardless.

I wouldn't be surprised either, but I like the whole little Freudian can of worms it opens regardless. My theory is especially appropriate since Diana's the only one wearing that favorite Japanese fetish, the sailor schoolgirl uniform, with the long tie ribbon and all. The only thing she's missing are those humongous socks, but the boots cover that.

I'd give her age as 13-14.
Uhh... I wouldn't like to speculate too much but I work in social services and Diana set my 'sexually abused as a child' detectors wailing. They all too often treat it as a learning experience, teaching them one valuable lesson...
That sex is powerful, and can be used to control others very easily (Poor poor Meg...)
spookythings says it best I think.
Oh, and I'm going to come to the defense of Hoffman. Yes, the guy had wandering hands but I think Diana intentionally left herself open to that, simply to manipulate him. Hoffman is a class example of the self justification king, he honestly believed Clara cared for him, and that his petting of Diana was just him being affectionate. If he went too far ignoring his guilt would be too difficult even for him.

Me? Why, I'll have you know there is no one more innocent than me. Now, take back your words, before I beat the stuffing out of you!

*cowers in fear at Diana's presence*
*ahem*, anyways... Diana isn't innocent but not entirely evil either. She strikes me as a list of things, which involve manipulator etc but she also comes across as a scared girl.
Especially if we take the abuse route, since she was being 'abused' she most probably didn't know how to react to the attention and just let it happen. And then to make up for the 'weakness' so to speak that she portrays before Hoffman, she becomes a snooty b*tch around the rest of the children - all to hid her insecurities. It's like Asuka in Evangelion right? To make up for all her insecurities and things she thought were her own fault, she acts out-going and down right arrogant - not to mention attention-seeking.
And also, her relationship with Meg maybe just pure manipulation - relating back to what I just said, since she's not likely to want to get close to anyone, she leads Meg on but doesn't completely let Meg in.
Ehehehe, that's my two cents. *waits for backlash from Princess Jennifer for not completely playing the game* >w<

: P Actually, despite how little you've played of the game, that's a pretty good theory.^^

what's with Diana doing inside the cell of solitude and smashing chairs with the sledgehammer? An act of frustration when she fails to balance the state of being mature and youthful or her trying to escape from reality? It makes me think she may have a violent personality.

She smashed chairs with a sledgehammer? Where did you learn this from?
