Judging by her personality and dealings with everyone, I believe I know how she ended up as such. Per my guessing, I believe she was an only child. Her parents/parent often ignored her and they probably lived in a small apartment. Being left alone like that would most likely lead to her being quite antisocial and unable to connect with others. Living in a small apartment would be what led her to year to be free, trapped in a small area. Often she would probably look out the windows, yearning to be able to fly to freedom.
Of course, this is all a guess I'm basing off of what has been shown of her.

I wonder if maybe she was not actually a happy child, only to have that happiness suddenly ripped away from her when she became an orphan. She was like a bird whose wings had been clipped, and the orphanage became her cage. It would explain why she started looking for everlasting happiness-the happiness she'd had was taken from her. She wanted happiness that would never go away.

After considering this...I think you hit the nail on the head. Upon further thought, I think my analysis fits better with Wendy than with her...
Foiled again.
