The article and the rhyme. Neither are that odd, as lots of people get newspapers and the rhyme could just be another story of his that he is reciting.

Well, well, well ... I think I'm very confused now.
I must admit that I agree above all with PrincessJennifer's theory.
I consider myself number 1 Silent Hill Fan, so I think that the comparison between the two games (regarding the bathtub) is veeery good.
I also agree with the theory of Gregory taking inspiration from the Newspaper to write a 'song' for his son: it's all about WHERE we find the newspaper; Joshua's room has probably been closed since he died, so, thinking that only his death could make Gregory a kidnapper, we can deduce that Joshua read that newspaper previously to his dead, growing interested in the Stray Dog Rumors and asking (maybe indirectly) to his father for a tale about those events.
This theory is totally confirmed also by Gregory's Diary. Joshua was still alive when he was writing it, and died just 6-7 days after he read the newspaper, giving Gregory the time to think about his last tale. It was June 1929, then, so it's simple to understand why he was singing that rhyme spasmodically in 'Gingerbread House' Chapter. In the end, it also explains why the diary ends on June 27, along with the strange symbols on the calendar.
Besides, the rhyme talks about 'peas', and, even if Gregory is a pea farmer, I don't think that he would refer to the children he eventually kidnap calling them 'peas'. It is just a manner to soften the ruthless events into childish contents, for his son.
Going on, I think that his scars are caused by the ropes Wendy used to enslave him to her will.
The hole in the house, and also the phone cable cut down are obviously results of his anger for the death of his only son.
But ... I don't see why an angry person would dig two or three holes in the garden. I was wondering where Gregory buried his son ... maybe, as I read in another thread, he brought his corpse to the sea, where the airship sank.
Well, anyway, I'm going to tell you the ultimate truth.
I'm the kidnapper. Yeah, you all were wrong.
It all happened a long long time ago. I wonder if God will ever forgive me. °___°

In regards to the three holes, I do also believe that the makers of the game orinally intended for Gregory to be a more villianous character, but changed it rather last minute. Look at him in the trailer and the dropped scene-which explains the holes. He is both mean and violent-looking, as opposed to the sorrowful look he wears in the game itself.
There ARE definate rope welts that are REALLY bad on his wrists and ankles-I have a HUGE pic of him as Stray Dog. These look very different from the marks all over his body, so I believe they are from Wendy hitting him, probably when he was "disobedient".

Mh, can you show me this pic ? I'm very curious.
About the trailer and the removed cutscene, I know. And I prefer A LOT the Gregory I knew and .. ehm, 'loved', through the game.
He is very sorrowful and melancholy. Besides, the entire 'Gingerbread House' Chapter is really melancholy. The removed scene would have broken that wonderful nostalgic sensation.
Fortunately, the 'Evil' Gregory we see in the Trailer/First Scene, is too much indefinite, from his expressions to his actions, to ruin his final characterization. Moreover, he actually 'takes' Jennifer during the game, even if it is just to bring her in the Rose Garden, in the beginning of June.

I've been looking for the site again. I have all the pics saved-they are all huge and even some of bosses, etc.
While he does grab Jennifer, note that he does not hurt her. Even if he catches her after trying to escape with Wendy, he just grabs her and takes her back.

I have a question: if the pea rhyme was Gregory's last attempt to entertain his son, why did he contemplate suicide in the basement when Jennifer's not around? He even stopped reciting in her presence, does it mean he's pretending to be her father all along?
Anyway I agree with the view that making Gregory a sinister character would derail the melancholy tone of the game which the developers had wanted. Perhaps they wanted to focus all the guilt on Jennifer.

I think he often did it in front of her, because she clearly knew about the gun and even tells Wendy that he seems crazy sometimes.

To fortify the authenticity of the theory according to which Gregory is innocent, for the ones who didn't noticed, I'll quote something:
21 June 1929 Another Unexplained Disappearance There has been another mysterious disappearance of a child recently. Following missing children reports on the 7 and 14th, police are now investigating this case as both a possible kidnapping and a missing person. Local residents are advised now to allow children outside unsupervised and to take caution around any suspicious individuals.
Now, just look at this:
Sunday, June 22. Cloudy. I thought of a good idea for a story. I'm going to take a day off from the fields and concentrate on refining it.

^^ Exactly! Story idea! Nothing more!
Though, I do still think that the game makers originally planned for him to be a villian who HAD kidnapped the kids, but then suddenly dropped the idea and changed his character.

And in the trailer too, which was released before the game, as well as the original artwork for his character.

An interesting piece of evidence that supports my theory, is in a few snippets of audio that-like the cutscene of Gregory outside of the Gingerbread House-were cut from the final project but left on the disk. This dialogue is between Gregory and Joshua, and unlike the cutscene and a lot of the other audio, it has Gregory very in-character and seems likely that it was just removed because the matching scene just did not fit in(why would Jennifer see the two of them together if she had never met Joshua?).
In the dialogue, Joshua is asking his father what will happen next in the story he's being read. Gregory replies he will have to wait until tomorrow, because even he does not know yet. Joshua states that he loves his daddy's stories, and Gregory ask why he loves them so much. Joshua replies that it's because they are "scary and full of surprises". Gregory laughs and says that makes him happy. Joshua asks his father to sing to him, and that's where it ends. Though it being canon is questionable, it does have Joshua stating what I theoried about him loving scary stories with surprises, which fits the pea story Gregory recites. Interesting, huh?^^

Hmm, that's actually really good! In that case, we can interpret everything Gregory's written so far as just being ideas for his beloved son Joshua, since it seems as if Joshua likes that kinda thing. OwO

The deleted audio is a good point, Princess~
So, does the majority believe in Gregory's innocence, then?
