I thought I'd start a little thread on our darling little monsters.
Any thoughts and opinions on them are welcome here! ^^
Imps... Where do you think they come from? Well, besides the idea that we know that they come from a story spread around the Orphanage on how they'll clean you away along with the rest of the dirt.
But there's got to be more to them, right?
Especially, in the Unlucky Clover Field chapter - when they come out with their brooms etc they come out saying things like, 'Stray Dog kidnaps kids', 'Stray Dog gives us sweets' etc.
This makes me feel like they're also a kind of distorted and twisted reflection of the children themselves.
Yeah, okay - that's my take.^^
Anybody else?

Well either that or I was hearing things. >> << ><" I thought it was them - honest to God. Either that, or it was just the kids whispering.

About 'em, I think that a lot of times they behave like the orphans.
I can give various examples:
1. When we approach the first Horrible Imp, he's crying just like Olivia does (or maybe another child).
2. During the 'Unlucky Clover Field' Chapter, they actually say "Stray Dog comes at night", "Place all wastepaper in the rubbish bin and laundry in the Filth Room ...", "Children who don't clean up will be punished...", "Hello, boys and girls, it's time for some cleaning."
3. They seem to whisper something to Hoffman when you find him corded to his chair in the Infirmary. He reply 'little brats' or 'poor brat'. I think that they're acting just like the orphans, telling bad things to Hoffman about Jennifer.
I realize that they of course embody the Horrible Imps of the rumors. But they also embody the darkest side of the orphans (they actually beat Peter with the brooms; moreover, they carry away Brown's body after his death). It's a sort of psychologic distortion; we must always remember that all this happens only (at least, it his my theory) in Jennifer's mind.
Oh, another thing. Do you remember what Jennifer says in one of the rooms in the basement (I don't remember which) ? She says that she already encountered the Imps, when she was in the Orphanage, and they came because she had a weak heart. Childish imagination, uh ?

OMG! I knew I wasn't crazy! I so heard them! OwO
Wow, that's actually some pretty good stuff to back it up. ^^ I knew they were kinda of like the psychological distortions of the children.
They also seem to share the same disdain for Martha. ^^

well, those imps are nothing as grotesque as those monsters in Jacob's Ladder/Pan's Labyrinth. Anyway, what do those imps' masks represent, the bird, rat, pig, goat, etc? And what does it mean when you kill 3 of each kind during the Funeral chapter to gain entry into the courtyard?

I don't think those are masks - but I guess if you look at it from that point of view, they could be representative of each of the main leads - the bird for Eleanor, Pig for Amanda and the Goat for Meg. Again, it could be a subtle suggestion to how the imps and the children of the orphanage are connected.

Then there is the scene where all the orphans leave and the imps appear and tie up Jennifer.

Yes, that too. Do the children become the imps? Or do they have the imps under their control?

Yes, that too. Do the children become the imps? Or do they have the imps under their control? I think it's more complicated than that. The Imps we see in each Chapter of Rule of Rose are a mixture between the rumors about the 'imps that come to clean you up', the orphans (with their cruelty grown exponentially), and the animals who best symbolize the children: - Diana -> Fish Imp (Because of the Mermaid, they could be called 'Reverse Mermaids') - Amanda -> Pig Imp (Because of her sick narcissism) - Meg -> Goat Imp (Because of Mary and Sally) - Eleanor -> Bird Imp (Because of the toy bird she kept in her cage) There are also other cases: - Rabbit Imp (Because of Sir Peter ... this one's obvious) - Rat Imp (Maybe because there were a lot of rats in the orphanage, as the one we see in 'Bird of Happiness' final cutscene; besides, there is also the rat they used for 'punishment') Moreover, you should remember that a lot of Imps have their head covered with a paper bag. Does this fact reminds you anything ? X°

The bags the orphans wore for Halloween.^^
The rat imp makes me think of Susan, who was always spreading rumors.
