We have no problem saying that Diana holds the social rank of Duchess, the first order, of the Red Crayon Aristocrats. But when it comes to Meg's and Eleanor's ranks, the website, manual, and game all interchange between the two girls.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now here is what we know so far:
There are three ranks underneath the Red Rose Princess and Bear Prince, they are the Duchess, Countess, and Baroness. To get technical, according to Dictionary.com. The Duchess is "the wife or widow of a duke"; the Countess is "the wife or widow of a count in the nobility of Continental Europe or of an earl in the British peerage"; and the Baroness is "the wife of a baron".
In both the Japanese and American official websites: Under "CHARACTER". It lists down Meg as the Hakushaku Fujin [”ŒŽÝ•vl] / Countess, and Eleanor as the Danshaku Fujin [’jŽÝ•vl] / Baroness. But under "WORLD" and "KEYWORD". You can see the poster of the "Social Rank - Refined Class". It list down Eleanor as the Countess and Meg as the Baroness.
In the American instruction manual, it lists Meg as holding "the second spot in the pecking order" and Eleanor as "ranked No. 3 in the Aristocrats of the Red Crayon".
In the video game, according to "The Red Crayon Royalty" and the "Social Rank - Refined Class" posters. It shows that the Countess is the second order and the Baroness is the third order. Only in the "Social Rank - Refined Class" poster does it list down Eleanor as the Countess and Meg as the Baroness. Also note that in "The Little Princess" book, it states: "The girl obeyed the Rule of Rose, but the Countess refused to like her. / The girl obeyed the Rule of Rose, but the Baroness punished her still. / The girl obeyed the Rule of Rose, but the Duchess taunted her anew." The Countess is shown with a birdcage, while the Baroness is shown with glasses.
According to the Item FAQ by sheldonbunny, you collect three Knives called the Viscount, Earl, and Marquis. Since you can change to whatever chapter you please, the order of the Knives do not change. So seeing as how the order of the chapters should be, for completion purposes, "Bird of Happiness" [Eleanor], "The Goat Sisters" [Meg], and "Mermaid Princess" [Diana]. One could say that the Viscount = Eleanor, Earl = Meg, and Marquis = Diana. Now the ranking order should be that the Viscount is below the Earl and the Marquis is above the Earl. By that, Eleanor is the third ranking order [Baroness] and Meg is the second [Countess]. Not to mention as how the chapters goes from the lowest rank [Eleanor] to the highest rank [Diana]. But do note that the orders which the books are located has Eleanor's book in Diana's spot, and Diana's book in Eleanor's spot.
If you want to use the FMVs as arguments, here is what I saw of the three girls together. Meg is always shown next to Diana, as the second order, while Eleanor is the last girl, in the third order. It can be seen in "Film 5/14, Part 2" [Jennifer punishes Amanda with the rat] and "Film 13/14" [Opening Movie]. But in "Film 3/14, Part 2" [Amanda punishes Jennifer with the rat] and "Film 13/14" [Opening Movie], when it first introduces the girls, it shows in the order of Diana, then Eleanor, and lastly Meg. Even on their podium, Diana and Eleanor share the same height while Meg is on the lower podium. Now do note that the order which the social ranks in the "The Red Crayon Royalty" poster does not hold true to the FMVs, even though it may show Meg as the Countess and Eleanor as the Barones. Because if that was the case -- the Red Rose Princess often sits where the Bear Prince is at on the poster which is on the left chair.
And if someone wants to use the order which Mr. Hoffman announces the names of the children before they went to bed, since Mr. Hoffman tends to say the names in the order of his favorites. He announces Diana's name first, then Eleanor's, and then Meg's. Could this mean that Eleanor has more power than Meg?
And there are many more things to put into account like personalities, heights, and etc. So yeah, scratching your head yet? ^^;;
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To people who want it short:
MEG = COUNTESS, ELEANOR = BARONESS
- In the "CHARACTER" section of the official websites.
- In the American instruction manual.
- By the order of the Knives [Viscount, then Earl] and the Chapters [Bird, then Goat] in the game.
ELEANOR = COUNTESS, MEG = BARONESS
- In the "KEYWORD" section of the official websites.
- In the "Social Rank - Refined Class" poster in the game.
- In "The Little Princess" book in the game.
Now that you know, who do you believe holds the second and third order of the Red Crayon Aristocrats? Is Meg the second order, Countess; and Eleanor is the third order, Baroness. Or is Eleanor the second order, Countess; and Meg is the third order, Baroness.
[NOTE: I apologize for the long post, but it's good to know that you got all of the facts before coming up to a conclusion.]
