this is only a small thing, but it sprung to mind so i though i'd put it up here in order for you to all point out how obvious it is/shoot it down in flames.
during the sepia coloured trip down memory lane in 'once upon a time', it becomes clear that the imps were just the manifestation of one of the stories wendy spun for her minature cohorts. during the game, you run into some variations on this theme, such as the imps wearing various animal heads. i was just wondering, could this possibly be a throw back to the children's halloween costumes? Jennifer mentions that these were one of the things in the orphanage that scared her and in the scene where she digs up brown's coffin, the aristocrats are intorduced to the player compleat with their costmized bags. Amanda's is adorned with a pig while diana's has a picture of a fish on it. sure enough, these crop up as enemies in the game. I couldn't make out what the others were wearing (i'm pretty sure one of them was a rat, though)but it seems asthough the specialized imps are a maniphestation of both wendy's tales and the abuse she may have recived at the hands of the others...

The specialized animal Imps come from two places - First, like you said, is the kid's Halloween costumes. The second is from story events.
The Fish Imps - the Fish in Hoffman's room that was taken one day. The Goat Imps - The two "Goat Sister" dolls The Pig Imps - IIRC, the paper for the original Gift for the Rag Princess chapter, before it was switched to the missing bear, was to bring a pig The Rabbit Imps - Wendy's pet rabbit The Rat Imps - Not sure, maybe there were rats in the orphanage, and maybe the rat on a stick thing actually did happen once The Bird Imps - Eleanor's stuffed bird
