What we are never told-how Jennifer's adventure begins. So many reviews and game sites try and claim that Jennifer has just lost her parents and is on the bus to the orphanage, which to anyone who has played the game, is clearly false. Even in the past, she was never sent to the orphanage because of her parents' death. Some say Jen is dead, and must come to terms with her past to move on. Me, I think it was a dream that started in the trailer.
Jen falls asleep in a park and awakens in a dream version of it. She sees Brown, as well as Wendy and a younger version of herself, but does not recognize any of them. Suddenly, Brown is gone and an airship passes overhead, enveloping her in darkness. She awakens again, this time on the bus where we begin the game. What does everyone else think?

The opening sequence is kinda different from the main game, there are dream/flashback scenes like Jennifer being pulled by Gregory into the cubicle but that was never featured or explained during the game. But if I were to assume if most of the opening intro is a summary of Jen's dreams/hallucinations, then I'd say she actually woke up in the park after the long nightmare but found herself intoxicated in all sorts of imaginations now that she remembers everything. The girls playing, airship passing overhead and Brown for instance. It's only when the darkness had enveloped her did she realize it was starting to rain and fully awakened by the sensation of raindrops, but a stray dog (no collar of Brown's name?) has come to her so she's hugging it tightly, then closing her eyes to think back about the 2 places that had affected her life: the orphanage and the airship.
My other theory is that if she had slept on the bus, then wakes up and find herself at the orphanage where all the things happened, it's likely she could have died, or never made it back. But she has finally redeemed herself. That would be more on the supernatural side.

One thing about the trailer, I can't help but feel it was created before the story was completely fleshed out. Some scenes are never properly explained, and it features the violent/mean-seeming Gregory from the scene that was cut. The Gregory we see in the rest of the game, even as stray dog, never looks mean like that, just sorrowful.
That is a good theory about the park scenes taking place AFTER the game. Wonder if we will ever be able to figure out the truth...
