I don't think Clara could have detested Jen for that reason. If she even disliked Jen at all, it was because she was "filthy". If it was because she was a child, why not detest the others? And I still don't believe Hoffman was doing those things to her. I think her as the mermaid is because mermaids were thought to be pure and beautiful ladies-something the girls saw Clara as.

Since we're seeing from Jennifer's perspective (it's her mind after all), we would never know what Clara's character was actually like and if she got sexually abused. It's either Jennifer's memory of her is still distorted or she is trying to evade her opinion of her (the missing drawer and her unwillingness to open it in order to discover more clues about her)

Another interesting fact: In the unused dialogue, mermaid Clara actually has some lines. She speaks about being alone and unable to do anything about it. Also, she states something about a story Mr. Hoffman told her, about her being like a beautiful mermaid and getting adopted. I don't remember it exactly, but I thought I should bring it up.

I've seen several references to unused dialogue and/or cutscenes. I did find a gamescript on the Gamefaqs site, but don't think it contained reference to these. Does anyone know how I could find them? I'm sure those would be very illuminating.
As far as whether Clara was abused by Hoffman, I think the game leaves it purposefully vague. I've noticed that Japanese stories tend to leave a lot more to the imagination.

For the unused dialogue and cutscenes, I could send them to you if you have MSN. The only other place to get it from is a place you are better off not going to.

No, alas, I only have a crappy AOL account. Thanks for the offer, though! Maybe, if it's not too much trouble, you could post a synopsis? Please? On topic: I was pretty convinced that Hoffman was doing something shady with Clara until the "once upon a time" chapter. That seemed to be the chapter when everything was being explained, and there was nothing there (either in Clara's or Hoffman's texts) to confirm any abusive relationship. So, I'm officially confused!

I agree that Clara was the Mermaid as well as Diana...HOWEVER, I believe the vomit to be a strong symbol of pregnancy/morning sickness, and the rest is self-explanatory

I don't think it's vomit-it seems more like she is crying acid. Clara also seems like the type who would cry a lot.

the vomit is clearly coming out of clara's mouth. the whole theme of clara is the sexuality of her and how she is being raped. i still strongly believe that the developers wanted you to believe that she was sexually abused and suffered from morning sickness. remember at the begining of the game in the attic there are various bloody tools (ie scalpel, forceps) that could have been used for an abortion.

Theories about the bloody tools can be found in the Theories section.
And you really can't see clearly where the acidic substance is coming from. In the unused audio, she has dialogue in her mermaid form, which suggests she was crying because she thought she was never going to be adopted. Hoffman is only briefly mention as telling her about mermaids.

interesting...i never even thought it could have been anything other than vomit, considering the implications...i think her crying would be too basic, i mean they all have something to cry about really.....what distinguishes her from the rest?? intercourse/pregnancy...a quick look over at the gamefaqs message board and the first subject was "Boss Battle" about Clara hahah! anyway, seems as if the general impression is that it is vomit...
"So, I'm having a bit of trouble fighting Clara in the Mermaid chapter. I've fought her two times, both with the steel pipe, and I just can't beat her! She ends up vomitting all over me to the point where I can't move quickly enough to dodge her attacks."
"You can try to go after her from behind when she vomits, but I found it hard to be successful every time. However, you can cancel out her vomit attack if you're very quick"
"The center of the room was easier for me to avoid the big vomit pools she spits when she convulses and floods beneath her."
also the main FAQ by Sephirosuy seems to think the same...
"The boss will either attack with her own hands or vomit some poison liquid"
I'm not saying that this proves anything and i'm very open to debate, it just seems like this is the one thing that they wanted to throw at us for an obvious explanation of the character, that she was pregnant with morning sickness.
Take care!

For battle help, see the threads in Hints.
But the fact is, you can't believe anything in the game right off. Everyone thought Gregory was guilty of a certain thing, but our insight here has found lots of evidence otherwise. It's the same with this, since we have little evidence to support that she was even being touched by Hoffman at all, other than the already-proven overactive imagination of a little girl.
