Were they? I know they were around for the Onion Bag (grossing a girl out with bugs seems right up the Princes' alley), but I don't remember them ever in the candle room.

The boys were probably tag alongs. When it was interesting they jumped in. So RCA room with all that 'girly' stuff they didn't care, but to dump bugs on a girl?! You got to be kidding! What boy wouldn't want to do that? Especially to a girl that got so many privileges?

I always figured Susan and Olivia were just too young to be playing the big girls' games; we all remember that obnoxious era of "little brother rules" for when your younger brother is too young to be playing whatever game's going on (like Dungeons and Dragons or Monopoly) but your mom makes you let him play anyway, so the rules have to change so he doesn't pitch a fit and get everybody in trouble. Picking on the little kids is always a good way to get a whoopin as far as I know.
So Susan and Olivia get to be candle-holders or whatever gratuitious but unofficial position they have in the RCA. (Do they ever mention it?)
As for the boys, they didn't do much of anything except play amongst themselves. They didn't even do chores. Though I wonder if that can be chalked up to Jennifer being an unreliable narrator and she just didn't remember them very well.
Also, yes, Susan's accent is super cute. Yay little Irish girls!

i hadn't considered that Susan was that much younger than the others until your post cellerikun. It makes sense, and the idea of the RCA being passed down totally rox my sox. In fact, in a waaaaaay indirect way, it's the idea i have for RoR2.
Susan't accent FTW!!!

Susan looked about four or five to me; Olivia's probably around three. Does it give us ages for any of the other girls?
What's your RoR2 idea? I think this is the first I've heard

I would put Meg and Eleanor at 7-9, and Diana 9-11. Wendy and Jen at 7-8. Olivia at 4. Don't remember Susan well enough to call her. Amanda at 7-8. And Diana's a bit short, but then again, in the 1930's people weren't quite as tall.

The only one I distinctly remember is the scene where Jennifer get's the red crayon. I'm pretty sure there were one or two others though. You have to look during the wide shots of the Candle Room - you can see the boys on the steps where the bear and the Princess Doll sit.

I never thought much about Susan or little Olivia (who I think is adorable, even though her crying is a bit annoying) or the boys participating with the monthly gifts. But I think it was Olivia, who was crying at the offering door in the Mermaid Princess chapter saying something about how there is no such thing in referring to the unmarried mermaid. So, I do believe that the little ones play along as well. Why else would Olivia cry about that if she didn't need to look for one?

Hm, that's a good point, actually. She's crying over the butterfly in the very beginning, too, isn't she?
Huh. Then, are they just "wretched peons" as Diana calls them, alongside Amanda and Jennifer but not as actively participating? Because they don't seem to be influential members of the RCA, that's for sure, but they're still up there on the candle altar in the cut scenes.. I wonder if Jennifer just remembered them being more highly regarded than she herself was and so her memories reflect them as being mostly unaffected but definitely present?

The best way to keep those you abused from turning on you is to give them a target for their anger. So if Amanda, Susan, or Olivia were abused, then give them a target in Jen and it'll keep order.

Man, I completely forgot about the boys being there for the "red crayon for youuuuuuuuu" scene, though now that I think about it, I did see Thomas' little impish form crawling under some sheets.
Olivia and Susan do look for the monthly gifts, but I don't know how strict the older girls are about accepting them; in the butterfly candle room scene, they're both inside, for instance. Maybe it is the "little brother/sister" rules in effect.
And yeah, I thought Susan sounded faintly Irish, but didn't want to say so since I'm not an expert on these things.

I think everyone needs to find a gift, even Diana. But since the RCA accepts them, if they don't find one, no one would know.
Or everyone did have to find one for Wendy (the Princess), even Diana. But there did not have to be very strict rules for anyone other than Jen, since Wendy only cared to isolate Jen. Remember, Jen feels like it is only her and Amanda (and occasionally Olivia) that has to hunt, but we all know about Jen's memory. And Wendy didn't have to be the one to badmouth Jen, Diana could have fulfilled that role as an XO (she was the next in line anyways).

with the exception of the butterfly, the concept of finding 'gifts' is misleading. theres only one goat, one mermaid, one rabbit, and one joshua the bear. it seemed more like a competition rather than mandatory individual tributes. and from what i could gather from the butterfly, jennifer was the last one to bring hers, therefore it was worthless. for all we know, maybe it was past due by the time jennifer was able to locate it, henceforth why all the kids are already behind the door and debating on whether or not to let jennifer in with them.
