i vote for evil, in the sense that he was sick and probably a paedophile. and a brat. getting into a rivalry with a 9 year old and then abandoning the other children because you don't like her? grow up, hoffman.

Who did he get into a rivalry with? I don't think I fully understood why he left. And who exactly is Clara? Is she the mermaid? Does she appear anywhere else?

Yes, Clara was the mermaid, she was also the girl who was in the sick room with the pervert Hoffman at the begining of the game.

hoffman hated jennifer and left the orphanage because of her. fissil has a pretty good theory on why he didn't like jennifer in the theories thread.
clara was hoffman's favourite girl and he fawned all over her in his diary. she was in the sick room in the funeral chapter (i think) and if you talk to her, then try to leave, hoffman comes out of the adjecent room and tells her to come with him. then, if you peek through the keyhole at the door they went through, you see her on her hands and knees at his feet and him sweetly telling her she missed a spot. her reaction to him when he first comes into the room to get her (she visibly recoils and as she follows him, her shoulders are slumped and she looks completely defeated) seems very, very telling of their relationship.

There is one thing I don't understand with Hoffman's and Clara's relationship was that Hoffman must've tried really hard to not show it. Such as when he was calling the names of the kids, he called Clara's name second-to-last of Olivia's. We know that Hoffman likes to call the name of his favorite first as what Jennifer tells us, "He always announced our names in the order of his favorites. We'd all try our best to win his approval and be the first one to be called." So he called Diana's name first; the rest of the orphans; then Clara's name before Olivia's; and excluding Amanda's and Jennifer's names. I just see that as kind of odd. Maybe he was really trying to hide it by showing the orphans that he favors Diana more than Clara? Or maybe I'm off here... SOURCE: db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/rule_of_rose_script.txt

I mean on the second chapter when your on the airship and Hoffman and Clara are in the room across from the library, and when you attept to open the drawer, Clara runs over holding the drawer closed basically telling you not to open it. Then when you try to open it again, Jennifer refuses. Whats up with that?

that is kind of weird, meg. could be that the guys who wrote the game screwed up a bit, because he specifically mentions her in his diary and how wonderful she is:
'16 August 1930 Today, I was busy catching up on my work, when Clara came by to offer me a hand. I guess my teaching paid off. I was grateful for her kindness. In the wee hours of the morning, she was still working, so I gently took her to bed.
I can hardly believe it. My little Clara, bless her heart, is already 16 years old.
She tells me she wants to stay in the orphanage and help with the daily chores. Maybe I should seriously consider the offer. Tomorrow, I'll discuss it with Martha.'
and why would diana be his current favourite anyway, she killed his fish (or let it be killed, either way, he blamed her) and he knew it, saying that his opinion of her would suffer for it. the entry is dated in august, but the chapter where he read off the names was in november. get it together, hoffman!
princejoshua - i was wondering that myself. could be any weird thing. naughty pictures? sexy panties? i feel dirty.

he seems very, very taken with her. plus the wording of 'i gently took her to bed.' could just be my filthy, guttery mind, but . wouldn't it have been just as good to say 'i put her to bed'? and gently? like we thought he was going to bodyslam her onto her bunk? the way he writes about his little clara, bless her heart, just seems a little off, all tender and... whats the word i'm looking for... oh, i know: infatuated. he doesn't take the time or effort to yammer on about how great any of the other girls are, only that jennifer is a filthy wretch and diana killed his koi. and lets not forget the scene in the mermaid princess where clara is following hoffman, then we look into the room and see her in bed and him sitting beside her, leaning over her. (it just occured to me that that scene might be the one he was referring to in his diary. not that it matters... unless... i may have a new theory. more later).

Yea, he seemed to be "playing" with her, but that could have just been when he was tying her feet....just one of my own theories....
